Utilities and services
Councils are responsible for a wide range of utilities and services that we all rely on, from rubbish and recycling to street cleaning. Councils are currently also responsible for managing waste water, storm water and drinking water infrastructure – the ‘Three Waters’. But that may be about to change, with central government seeking to shift the delivery of Three Waters services to four new larger entities, which could borrow enough to upgrade the country’s water infrastructure.

Fund programmes in community centres that have a direct impact on residents wellbeing, thus saving downstream health costs.
Support better street sweeping and catchment and soak hole cleaning to help prevent flooding in areas where there is no storm water separation.
Support weekly curb-side collection as the most effective way to reduce waste and support food scraps collection service.
Support better dog controls to ensure fewer roaming, dangerous and out-of-control dog attacks.
Push for initiatives to increase uptake of the food scraps collection service.
Continue the stormwater separation programme in areas with a combined stormwater and wastewater network.
Support dog owners by enhancing local dog parks and creating more safe, off-leash spaces for dogs to roam freely.
Support pets and protect birds by working with cat owners to balance cat care and bird safety using solutions like bird-safe collars.
