Hastings-Havelock North General Ward
The Hastings District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 15 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). seven councillors will be elected from the Hastings-Havelock North ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. From parks and libraries to museums and art galleries, councils can be a key supporter of sporting, recreational and cultural events that bring communities to life. Community facilities, including sports grounds and town halls, are often owned and run by councils.

  • Support maintaining facilities and consider new projects only with clear community and economic benefits.

  • Establish or retain facilities or events that either break even or make profit.

  • Maintain existing community facilities, parks, pools, libraries and halls to a safe, affordable standard before committing to new builds.

    Support local festivals, arts and cultural events that bring communities together without excessive ratepayer subsidies.

    Review liquor licensing to be more tourist-friendly while keeping communities safe.

  • Support clubs and groups, which by definition represent the local community.

    Look for more opportunities to host sport events, club events and family gatherings.
