Invercargill City Council

The Invercargill City Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 12 councillors and the mayor. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Whether public transport is the responsibility of the regional or local council depends on where you are in the country. Local councils also own 87% of New Zealand’s roads.

  • Provide opportunities for more public micro transportation initiatives such as e-scooters and share bikes.

    Develop safer cycling lanes in the city and more secure bike stands.

  • Introduce a policy to separate scooter riders from vehicular traffic as the roads are wide enough.

    Introduce driver retraining for some traffic offences.

    Maintain the current limited level of public transport in the city.

  • Work with central government to keep public transport costs down despite their lack of listening.

  • Review current public transport with the intent of making it more efficient and accessible and consider the possible addition of rail.
