Local governments play a central role in protecting the environment, reducing waste and safeguarding biodiversity. The worsening state of New Zealand’s lakes and rivers is a major challenge for local councils, which work with regional councils in the management of water resources in their area.

Enable Wanaka Wastebusters to be the primary resource recovery organisation in the Upper Clutha.
Promote WAI Wanaka as the centre of excellence for monitoring and managing lake water in the southern region.
Ensure effective implementation of stormwater management plans.
Support work done by Wao and others to continue to ensure water is safeguarded for the future.
Note that this was always undertaken by ORC. I am not sure who does what now, and neither do they!
Encourage innovation which has led to leadership in this field for years and promote new diversity in this space.
Review the decision to discharge wastewater to the Shotover River for the next five years and assess the option of remediating the discharge field.
Trial filters on stormwater outlets running into lakes and rivers and work towards greater use of wetlands for stormwater filtration.
Ensure the use of new parks contracts to significantly reduce and better manage the use of toxic chemicals as anticipated.
