Climate change poses a huge challenge for communities as more frequent extreme weather events require us to rethink how we live and where. Local authorities are at the forefront of efforts to respond, with responsibilities for environmental planning and regulation, as well as civil defence. Many councils have plans to reduce emissions in their area and are working to help their communities adapt to a warming world.

Establish a robust rescue plan for Alpine Fault movement and prepare and adapt as Buller will be isolated for a lengthy time.
Allow the removal of material from the Buller River to lessen the risk of flooding in the township.
Utilise the knowledge of the Buller people to assist in creating contingency plans for events affecting the Buller region.
Ensure that adequate emergency support services are available when needed and maintain a resilient venue to house these services.
