Mayor of Lower Hutt

The mayor is the leader of the council. Their job is to promote a vision for the city and lead the development of the council’s plans, policies and budget. The mayor appoints the deputy mayor, establishes committees for particular topics, and appoints chairs for those committees. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Local authorities are at the forefront of efforts to respond, with responsibilities for environmental planning and regulation, as well as civil defence. Many councils have plans to reduce emissions in their area and are working to help their communities adapt to a warming world.

Climate change poses a huge challenge for communities as more frequent extreme weather events require us to rethink how we live and where.   • Continue the Hutt City Council policy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

    Support civil defence to increase the Hutt Valley resilience to natural disasters.

    Find sustainable solutions to the impact that climate change will have on our city, such as conducting a Citizens Assembly.

  • Cut council emissions by phasing out natural gas, switching to EVs and moving to net zero by 2050.

    Strengthen the Hutt City Emergency Response Team with more resources and training.

    Upgrade stormwater and critical infrastructure to prepare for climate change impacts.
